Rugged Computers Designed for Demanding Jobs

Firefighters and EMS

Firefighters and EMS personnel face tremendous challenges when responding to emergency situations, so the last thing needed is additional obstacles such as a malfunctioning mobile computer.  AMREL understands access to critical data and emergency headquarters can be the key to a successful outcome.  AMREL takes their requirements extremely serious, putting their years of experience and knowledge behind every ROCKY, and as a result has proven its sustainability when disasters strike and other equipment fails. ROCKY wireless ready systems can be relied upon to maintain communications between the emergency field personnel and headquarters during a crisis.  When vital data such as medical records, building plans and environmental conditions need to be accessed quickly, the ROCKY Mobile has your solution. The ROCKY Mobile’s DVI interface permits the use of multiple displays (up to three) for monitoring multiple information sources.  For example, an EMS vehicle might have personnel in the front cab viewing navigational information while the system in the rear is accessing medical information.

During emergency situations, the Global Positioning System (GPS) is a valuable tool for any dispatcher. Using GPS, wireless communication and Geographic Information System (GIS) mapping, dispatchers are able to track incidents and know at any given time the location of each vehicle.  GPS also provides navigational information to firefighters en route to calls, eliminating the need for physical maps and directions.

Law Enforcement

Tactical Command Vehicles-

AMREL’s rugged computers are used by law enforcement agencies around the country. The ROCKY Mobile is the premier solution for smaller tactical command post vehicles such as Tahoes and Suburbans because of its unique ability to provide a three display configuration requiring only one CPU system and radio system.  As with Fire and EMS agencies, Law Enforcement agencies find the ROCKY Mobile to be a powerful yet cost effective solution providing the ability to have one display in the front of the vehicle for dispatching, routing and incident preplanning while in transit to the emergency scene.  After arriving on scene, a tactical command post in the rear of the vehicle is up and running.  There is no need to start up another computer system or flip a switch to connect to the data network; another work space with one keyboard and two screens mounted in the rear is active and ready to go.  Because of this unique setup, the tactical commander can display information including available resources, mapping, pre-fire plans or even pictures and video on a separate screen without sacrificing the valuable real estate of the tactical commander’s main screen.  This unique configuration is only available through AMREL, and requires no additional modifications to the Mobile. AMREL’s UniSOL line of displays and keyboards can be utilized for multi display configurations.

Patrol Vehicles-

Mobile computing now makes it possible for law enforcement officers to quickly and easily access a myriad of applications including RMS, AVL, GPS, wireless communications networks (WAN), and CAD. Officers can also retrieve real time crime mapping, Federal & State database access, and mug shots. In the field where a matter of seconds could mean life or death, it is important that electronic assistants utilized by officers and staff have fast performance, good functionality and be durable and dependable. In the field, officers can file incident reports on the spot, reducing the risk of transcription errors, as well as making more informed decisions.

Equipped with better information sources, officers, investigators, and public safety officials will be able to investigate incidents more thoroughly. Witness interviews, crime scene data, and even photographic records will be available to investigators at the click of a mouse. With the addition of rugged computer solutions to the law enforcement arsenal, patrol officers now have the ability to instantly reference information about the vehicle that's being stopped, allowing the officer to make a more informed judgment in determining the next course of action. Through the use of a Global Positioning System, an officer’s exact location can be pinpointed and valuable seconds shaved off of the response time when backup is required.

Utility

Those in the utility industry know closing the information loop between field and internal operations is a pressing issue. Customers expect to reach a representative capable of accessing real time account information, assess their situation and quickly dispatch a technician if necessary - all in one phone call. In this day and age, information equals empowerment and often determines whether a company will flourish or fade. Customers are no longer satisfied with a company that will process requests “within the next 24 hours”.

For this reason, utility companies employee the ROCKY as a dependable tool in addressing their customer’s service demand. AMREL’s rugged computers track technicians, simplify dispatching, process service orders quickly and efficiently, and give customers answers in real time. AMREL also offers the integration of a GPS (Global Positioning System) receiver.

GPS can be used to track the locations of mobile personnel, making it a useful tool for fleet management. Wireless mobile computers simplify fleet management and dispatch, and can be configured to allow field personnel to access databases from their corporate network. ROCKY rugged computers can make processes such as carrying out and inputting the specifics of a field service order much easier. With ROCKY as a communication tool, field technicians can review and update a customer’s file from the field in real time.

With AMREL’s Alpha-Star™ Sunlight Readable Displays, touchscreens that function with stylus or gloved hand, and rugged design and wireless ready capability, ROCKY is the ideal mobile computing solution for the utility industry.

Construction

It is not uncommon to see the ROCKY rugged computer mounted on large laser screeds as part of a 3-dimensional machine control system, allowing concrete to be placed over contoured sites utilizing automatic surveying and leveling functions. AMREL’s ROCKY Unlimited and Apex have been utilized by construction companies around the country for this purpose. ROCKY’s construction work is undoubtedly one of the best exercises to test its ruggedability.  Mounted on top of large screeds, the ROCKY encounters extreme temperatures, shock, humidity, unexpected rain and a great deal of vibration with ease. When necessary, AMREL's customers such as Somero may need to turn to AMREL’s Customizable COTS Program to meet their unique requirements.  An example of such modifications would be the customized ROCKY which is now included in Somero’s 3-D Profiler System.

Field Surveying

Often data acquisition and field surveying workers need more display real estate to perform their duties efficiently than a standard laptop, tablet or fixed mount computer can provide no matter how large the size of a single display. Utilizing the power of the UniSOL screen and extended desktop functionality available in Microsoft’s 2000 or XP operating systems and most new computing systems, field personal can now effectively gather data and display it in almost real time.  One screen (on laptop or tablet) can display any control interfaces the field worker needs while the second screen displays the gathered data allowing for verification of integrity or fine tuning.  Further, AMREL’s ability to mix and match its products brings power and flexibility to the field that has never before been available from one computer manufacturer.
